Chilean National Day Marked in Seoul
Envoy Hernan I. Brantes Hosts Dinner at Hotel

Chilean Ambassador to Seoul Hernan I. Brantes hosted a reception at Banyan Tree Club and Spa Seoul in Jangchung-dong on Sept. 19 (Monday), 2011 on the occasion of its National Day or "Fiestas Patrias (Independence Day)."

Chileans celebrate their National Day or its Independence DaY (also locally called "Fiestas Patrias," which literally means "Patriotic Parties") on September 18 every year since 1810, the year Chile gained its freedom from Spain, its former colonial ruler.

The dinner reception attracted hundreds of high-profile guests including scores of top foreign envoys and local politicians.

Chile and South Korea formed an official diplomatic relations in June 1962.

Since the establishement of diplomatic ties, the two countries have been bolstering its relations in political, economic, and cultural areas.

Chile strongly supports Korea in its policy for peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula.

In the international arena such as the UN, Chile has supported South Korea against North Korea’s nuclear ambition.

A huge step in bilateral relations of Chile and South Korea was the FTA (free trade agreement), which was effective in April 1st 2004.

The bilateral trade volume have increased four times since the FTA agreement.

The volum increased from 1.8 billion US dollars in 2004 to 7.1 billion US dollars in 2009.
