DSM Dyneema Highlights Key Developments for South Korean Market
Marco Kleuters, vice president, APAC, Life Production, DSM Dyneema

Marco Kleuters, vice president of Life Protection DSM Dyneema Asia-Pacific, which recently developed innovative light weight ballistic material SB71, emphasized in a press conference in Seoul that DSM Dyneema will continue to make a strong commitment to Korea.

Korea is one of the three major markets in Asia-pacific including India and China. As part of its growing commitment to bring the added value of Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber, to the Asia Pacific marketplace, DSM Dyneema, the inventor and manufacturer of the Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber participated in the ADEX trade event in Seoul from 18 to 23 October, and featured a number of major new developments enabling large innovation potential in multiple South Korean markets to save and improve quality of lives.

Dyneema® is 15 times stronger than steel on a weight-for-weight basis, and up to 40 percent lighter than Aramid. It is used in a ever expanding range of applications and markets where lightweight strength and durability are of the essence, including body and vehicle protection applications, helping to save lives for soldiers and law enforcement officers.

Following earlier recent innovations from existing technolgies like Dyneema® HB80, enabling lightest weight helmets, as well as innovations from new technologies like Dyneema® BT10 , enabling light weight protection at higher level of affordability for both vehicle as well as personal protection, a key highlight at the show is the launch of Dyneema®SB71 – the next new grade of Dyneema® UD was specifically designed and developed for use in ballistic vests certified under NIJ0101.06 standard, suitable for both law enforcement and military.

Vests made with Dyneema®SB71 combine lowest possible weight with highest protection performance - providing greater mobility, comfort and protection to wearers. A further key development is the construction of Asia’s first independent ballistic testing center in Singapore by DSM Dyneema which is expected to be operational in Q4 2012.

The new center will act as a hub to facilitate testing and innovation in materials and applications for customers across the Asia-Pacific region. DSM Dyneema works very close with customers and end-users to develop applications meeting local specific needs and enable lightest weight and optimum protection solutions in both personal and vehicle protection.

“We are fully committed to growing our business in the Asia Pacific region and will continue to invest in expanding our regional presence and capabilities. Implementing the Tech Center locally in Asia is a key milestone in the companies’ strategy of having local teams and facilities to support it’s growing customer base in the region using global know-how. It will be an excellent place to meet and work together with our customers and end-users and will bring speed to innovation based on local demands,” said Vice President Marco Kleuters. “DSM has a stated strategy of focusing on high growth markets across the globe, and we see South Korea having high potential with a growing demand for improved lightweight vehicle and personal protection applications.

We are continuously increasing our presence here by actively launching new applications, participating in industry trade exhibitions such as ADEX, and driving local customer engagement activities, with the aim to innovate high-end solutions based on Dyneema® for the South Korean market to save and improve quality of lives.

DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber™. Dyneema® is an Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE) fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on weight for weight basis.

Dyneema® fiber floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are therefore more or less unlimited. Dyneema® is an important component in ropes, cables and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries as well as in nets and containers in the aircargo industry.

Dyneema® is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, Dyneema® is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing for police and military personnel.
