Lecture on Dr. Syngman Rhee to Be Held
His Close Ally, Dr. Lim Young-Shin Will Be Explored
The Founding President Syngman Rhee (right) talks with US Gen. Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) during the declaration of the Republic of Korea in Seoul on August 15, 2948. At left is Gen. John Reed Hodge (1893-1963), who was the military governor of South Korea from 1945 to 1948.

Dr. Syngman Rhee (ع: 1875-1965) was arguably one of the most prominent South Korean leaders in its struggle for independence against Japanese colonialists who ruled the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.

Dr. Rhee is not only revered by many South Koreans for his patriotic struggles against Japanese colonial ruler but also he is derided by some for his dictatorial role as the founding president of the newly-born South Korea.

A group of patriotic-minded South Korean formed "Dr. Syngman Rhee Memorial Society" a year so ago to study the South Korea's first holder of doctor's degree from the United States.

Dr. Lee Ki-Su

The group, chaired by Dr. Lee Ki-Su, former Korea University president, hosts seminars and hold regular meetings to study Dr. Rhee.

The 61st lecture on Dr. Syngman Rhee will be held at Jungdong Church behind Doksoo Palace near Seoul City Hall under the title of Dr. Lim Young-Shin (: Luisa Lim) and Korean Women in Their Independence and Diplomatic Activities

Dr. Lim Young-Shin (1899-1977) was educated in Japan and later in the United States. She was an educator and independence leader during Japanese occupation of the Korean Peninsula. Later she became founder and president of ChoongAng University in Seoul.

As an intimate friend of Dr. Rhee she supported Dr. Rhee throughout Dr. Rhees life.

Researcher Han Ji-Eun of Sungkyunkwan University will speak about the topic. The special lecture will be delivered at 3 p.m. on Dec. 22, 2011.

There will be a congratulatory performance by Prof. Um Yoon-Jung, a local soprano, who is a conductor of Christian Vision Choir.

Also Korean group of the Hungarian Kodaly Girls Choir will also appear during the lecture.

For details or inquiries about the lecture call 010-4761-9119.
