Venezuela Marks 201st Anniversary of Independence in Seoul

Charge d’affaires Wolfgang Gonzalez of the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Seoul hosted a reception at his residence in Seongbuk-dong area of Seoul on July 4, 2012 on the occasion of its 201st anniversary of Venezuela’s declaration of independence from Spain.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela gained its freedom and independence from its former colonial rule of Spain on July 5, 1811 after Venezuelans defeated the Spanish army in the fierce battle.

The dinner reception was participated by numerous envoys from other countries posted in Seoul, local businesspeople, local journalists, and other personalities in other professions.

Among the diplomats were Spanish Ambassador Luis Arias-Romero, Colombian Ambassador Jaime Alberto Cabal Sanclemente, and Guatemalan Ambassador Rafael A. Salazar, Dominican Republic Ambassador Grecia S. Pichardo, and Dominican Republic Minister Counsellor
Ernesto Torres Pereyra.

Other local guests included Director-General Jang Keun-Ho of Ministry of Foreign Affaris and Trade’s Latin American & Caribbean Affairs Bureau, Assistant Director Kim Hyeon-Jeong of Ministry of Knowledge Economy, and Ms. Kim Jin-Ri of Soonchunhyang University Hospital’s International Health Care Center.

In a welcoming speech Charge d’affaires Gonzalez delivered a quite lengthy speech and Director-General Jang made a congratulatory address during the reception.

In the speech Mr. Gonzalez explained about the significance of its independence and the whole process they gained their independence.

The Venezuelan envoy also mentioned the continuous and close bilateral relations since Venezuela and South Korea opened official ties on April 29, 1965.

He went on to say that an MOU was signed between Venezuela and South Korea on April 21, 2009 for cooperation in the energy sector, which expedited the export of Venezuelan petroleum and natural gas to South Korea.

“Last April 27 our Petroleum Minister Rafael Ramirez visited South Korea and signed five cooperative agreements,” Mr. Gonzalez said. “With these agreements we expected from South Korea an investment of 18 billion US dollars”

He also said that growing ties in cultural cooperation and exchanges of knowledge and experience between the two countries.

In the congratulatory speech Jang mentioned the donation event of a “Bell of Friendship” donated by the South Korean government at Boyaca Obsevatory in Caracas on the occasion of 200th anniversary of Venezuelan independence.

He also touched upon the visit to Seoul by Venezuelan Minister of Energy and Petroleum Rafael Ramire, who signed an MOU with South Korean businesses for cooperation in the energy field.

In many other parts of the world the Venezuela’s most important day was celebrated.

More than 500 people gathered on the day to commemorate Venezuelan Independence Day at Bolivar Hall in London.

The Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the United Kingdom held a special reception at Bolivar Hall to mark the 201st anniversary of the declaration of independence in Venezuela.

In its capital, Caracas, Jul 5 (Prensa Latina) The 201st anniversary of Venezuela's Declaration of Independence was celebrated on July 5, 2012 with a military parade on Heroes Avenue and a solemn session was held in its Parliament.

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro addressed the session.
