Cho Yoon-Sun under Fire for “Showy Manner”
Youngest Minister, State Council’s Wealthiest Member
Minister Cho Yoon-Sun of South Korea’s Ministry of Gnder Equality and Family (MOGEF)

Minister Cho Yoon-Sun of South Korea’s Ministry of Gnder Equality and Family (MOGEF) is under criticism for her “showy manner” in taking care of the family members of the victims in the tragic accident of “Sewol” ferry, reported a local daily "DongA Ilbo" in its edition of April 22 (Tuesday), 2014.

The media-conscious minister was under increasing criticism for causing “confusion” in the aftercare of the ferry victims’ family members by broaching up a plan for the victims, different from a comprehensive inter-departmental plan, the daily reported.

The DongA report, co-written by Lee Sam-Mool and Kim Sung-Mo, said that Minister Cho’s ministry belatedly came up with a sudden plan for the ferry victims without discussing or coordinating with other relevant departments of the government.

Officially her ministry has nothing to do with the Sewol accident, the daily pointed out.

The ministry announced “Contingency Plan for Families of Ferry Victim” on April 21 (Monday), 2014, it said.

According to the plan, the ministry will appoint a designated teacher at each of the 35 schools attended by the children of the ferry victims’ families in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province for psychological counselling and other care services.

However, a carefully-coordinated comprehensive plan for the family members of the ferry victims have already prepared by relevant departments and other government agencies, the daily pointed out.

The daily quoted one government official as saying “Cho’s ministry abruptly stepped in our meeting, we may have to change our plan now.”

“It is so absurd that Cho’s ministry put her spoon on the table already prepared by others,” he said.

He pointed out that Cho’s ministry has nothing to do with this case, and her ministry lacks specialty and expertise in this affair, causing a lot of confusion in inter-departmental efforts to take of the accident.

Also under fire was Cho’s ministry’s window-dressing administration.

The daily went on to report that Minister Cho Minister Cho gathered 35 teachers from the 35 schools at Community Social Welfare Center in Ansan City on April 21 (Monday), 2014.

The daily suggested that Minister Cho tried to use the case for her publicity.

In the past media-conscious Cho was under heavy fire for her extravagant life style.

At 47 Cho is the youngest member of President Park Geun-Hye’s State Council, but she is the wealthiest member with her fortune nearing almost 5 billion won.

Very stylish and media-conscious Cho is also under criticism for her spending spree. Her yearly spending is close to 750 million won.

In 2012 Cho volunteered to became a spokesperson for then-presidential candidate Park Geun-Hye. Park appointed her as the minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family after Park was elected as president the following year.
