60th Vietnam People's Army Day Observed

Amb. Duong Chinh Thuc of Vietnam hosted a reception on the occasion of its 60th anniversary of Vietnam People's Army Day at a downtown hotel in Seoul Dec. 14, 2004.

The top Vietnamese envoy threw the reception at Hotel Lotte's Emerald Room to mark one of its largest national day — the 60th founding anniversary of the Vietnam People's Army, which falls on Dec. 22.

Over 300 local and foreign VIPs were invited to the standing buffet reception which started at 6:30 p.m. on the day.

The guests were from nearly all walks of life — military, political, business, academic, and other social field as well as diplomatic area of local and foreign countries. A number of military attaches from Korean and other countries participated in the reception.

Among the dignitaries were Chairman Lee Jung-Woo of The Seoul Times, President Kwon Won-Sik of Lotte Hotel, and Lt. Gen. Kim Sung-Il of ROK (Republic of Korea) Army's Defense Intelligence Agency.

Among the VIPs from diplomatic corps to Seoul were Amb. Rene Francisco Umana (Chinchilla) of Honduras, Amb. Amr M.K. Helmy of Egypt, Amb. Othman Jerandi of Tunisia, Amb. Urjinklhundev Perenlei Mongolia, Amb. Valeriu Arteni of Romania, Amb. Vitali V. Fen of Uzbekistan, Amb. Hussein Rammal of Lebanon, Amb. Jorge Bayona M. of Peru.

Other top diplomats included Minister-Counsellor Valery Suhinin of Russia, Brig. Gen. Harry O'hare of British Embassy. Gen. O'hare serves as defence attache while Minister Suhinin is deputy chief of mission.

Sen. Col. Nguyen Huu Tieu, defence attache of Vietnamese Embassy is making a toast with other military attaches.

Asked on the meaning of Vietnam People's Army Day Amb. Duong Chinh Thuc said "It is very meaningful day Vietnamese people defeated all the foreign invaders including French and American soldiers on our soil since we founded our People's Army on Dec. 22, 1944."

"We have successfully defended our nation and we are really proud of our Vietnam People's Army Day," the top Vietnamese envoy to Seoul added.

Along with it National (Foundation) Day of Sept. 2 (1945), Vietnam People's Army Day is one of the two largest national holidays.
