Amb. Savov Observes Bulgaria's National Day
Some 200 High-Profile Guests Attend Hilton Reception

Bulgarian Amb. to Seoul Alexander Savov hosted a reception at the Grand Ballroom of the Millennium Seoul Hilton Hotel to mark the anniversary of its National Day March 3, 2005, and the 15th anniversary of diplomatic relations with South Korea.

Mr. Savov delivered a speech in front of about 200 high-profile guests gathered to celebrate the Bulgaria's most important holiday. He mentioned how Bulgarians usually observe the National Day and also thanked each of the distinguished guests.

"The National Day event in Seoul has also been a celebration of the strong and growing partnership between Korea and Bulgaria and an opportunity for our Korean guests to experience aspects of the Bulgarian lifestyle," the top Bulgarian envoy to Seoul said in the speech.

Every March 3, Bulgaria celebrates its National Day, commemorating the day of Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman Empire in 1878.

Top foreign envoys and other senior diplomats came out in force to congratulate the Bulgarian ambassador on its National Day. They included Amb. Volodymyr Furkalo Ph.D. of Ukraine, Amb. Rene Francisco Umana (Chinchilla) of Honduras, Amb. Dato' M. Santhananaban of Malaysia,
Amb. Urjinklhundev Perenlei of Mongolia, Amb. Enrique Panes of Spain, Amb. Zaid Al-Sherida of Kuwait, Amb. Uzi Manor of Israel, Amb. Babiker Ali Khalifa of Sudan, Amb. Ahriz Abdelmoun'aam of Algeria, Amb. Valeriu Arteni of Romania, Amb. Abdul Maquit Mahmuduzzaman of Bangladesh, Amb. Lim Samkol of Cambodia, Amb. Carlos M.L. Frota of Portugal, Amb. Tomas Smetanka of the Czech Republic, Amb. Selim Kuneralp of Turkey, Amb. Gunayavedalage. Wijayasiri of Sri Lanka, Amb. Othman Jerandi of Tunisia, Amb. Mauel Arturo Tellez Miralda of Guatemala, and Amb. Federico Alberto Gonzalez Franco of Paraguay.

Several Korean dignitaries were also present. Chung Dong-Young, South Korea's unification minister, came and exchanged greetings and views with other participants led by Amb. Savov. Minister Chung is widely considered as a very strong presidential candidate of the ruling Uri Party for the next presidential election.

Ms. Doh Young-Shim, ambassador of South Korea'sTourism and Sports, was also present along with her husband Mr. Kwon Jung-Dal, a once powerful politician in the nation.

As the Bulgarian ambassador was busy greeting all the guests, Ivan Stamatoff, counsellor and deputy head of mission of Bulgarian Embassy, was a big help in making other guests feel at ease.

Honorary Counsul General Kim Hi-Young of Bulgaria was also greeting participants along with the ambassador and counsellor. Mr. Kim is chairman of Tongyang Moolsan Co.

Businessmen, including Mr. Choi Cho-Hyun, president of Korea Bulgaria Friendship Association, were also attending the reception.

In particular, Kim Yoon-Kyu, president of Hyundai Asan Corp. and his wife came to the reception to congratulate the Bulgarian ambassador on the National Day. Hyundai Asan is the company which opened the much-anticipated trip to Mt. Kumgang (Diamond Mountain) in North Korea.

The exceptional Bulgarian red wine made many guests stay late into the evening. All in all it was a perfect occasion for wine gourmets and connoisseurs to get the taste of authentic Bulgarian wine in the cozy wine cellar set up at the corner of the hall.

Present at the reception were about 200 guests from all walks of life — both Korean and other nationals as well as embassy related personnel. The standing buffet, which started at 6:30 p.m. in Hilton's Grand Ballroom, continued into the evening.
