Bangladesh National Day Observed in Seoul

at the Regency Room of the Hyatt Hotel in Seoul on March 28, 2005.

Mr. Mahmuduzzaman delivered a speech in front of about 200 high-profile guests gathered to celebrate the Bangladeshis' most important holiday. He mentioned how Bangladeshis usually observe the National Day and also thanked each of the distinguished guests for attending.

"The National Day event in Seoul has also been a celebration of the strong and growing partnership between Korea and Bangladesh and an opportunity for our Korean guests to experience aspects of the Bangladeshi lifestyle," the top Bangladeshi envoy said in his speech.

Every March 26, Bangladesh celebrates its National Day, commemorating the day of Bangladeshi's liberation from Pakistan in 1971.

The people of Bangladesh mounted one of the most effective guerilla wars of modern times on 26 March 1971. The nine-month long war, which cost countries lives, was the most glorious chapter in the history of Bangladesh. On December 16, 1971 the war came to an end, the people emerged victorious, and after centuries of subjugation, Bangladesh became an independent country.

The government of Bangladesh has also chalked out elaborate programs to observe the day. Honorable President and Prime Minister of the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh have given the special message separately due to the Independence and National Day. The day is basically a public holiday in Bangladesh.
