Prof. Marek Belka to Visit South Korea

Prof. Marek Belka, ex-prime ministger of Poland

Professor Marek Belka, who was until recently the prime minister of Poland, is coming to Seoul on Nov. 20, 2005 for a two-day visit as a candidate for a post of secretary-general of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

He will meet with the representatives of the Korean government including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Han Duck-Soo, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ban Ki-Moon, and Minister for Trade Kim Hyun-Chong. He will also hold a meeting with leading Korean businessmen.

Prof. M. Belka is a world known economist with a Ph.D. degree in economics. He continued post-doctoral studies at Columbia University and the University of Chicago. He was a visiting professor at the Center for Economic Research, London School of Economics, and the University of Cologne.

He is also an experienced practicioneer. Mr. Belka was a chief economic adviser to the president of Poland. His distinguished political career includes a post of deputy prime minister and minister of finance and a post of prime minister of the Republic of Poland from May 2004 till November 2005.

Mr. M. Belka experience as an international figure include the post of a chairman of the Council for International Coordination for Iraq, responsible for international aid co-ordination for the reconstruction of Iraq and the Director of Economic Policy of Iraq under CPA. He held these positions from June 2003 until March 2004.

Prof. Marek Belka has successfully passed to the third and final stage of the selection and appointment procedure for the next secretary-general of the 30-member Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Mr. Belka is ranked as one of the best suited candidates to lead the organization in the coming years.
