FM Ban Ki-Moon Heads to US for Talks with Rice
High-Level US-Korea Alliance Talks in Washington DC
South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon ()

South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon () left the country through Incheon International Airport at 11 a.m., Jan. 17, 2006 for a high-level strategic dialogue between the US and South Korea.

Minister Ban will hold the first round of his ministerial talks with his US counterpart, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice at 9 a.m. on Jan. 19, 2006 (US local time). Ban will hold a press conference after the
meeting. At noon on the same day, Minister Ban will have a lunch meeting with Secretary Rice.

In this strategic dialogue, Ban and Rice will discuss medium- and long-range issues including future alliance between US and South Korea, Northeast Asian politics, anti-terrorism, and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Also on the agenda are such issues as six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear program, relocationn of the US Embassy in Seoul, and the US and South Korean military alliance.

Prior to his strategic meeting, Minister Ban will stop in New York City, to meet UN Secretary General Kofi Anan, CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) President Richard Haass, and foreign ambassadors
of major countries.

On the night of Jan. 19, 2006, Minister Ban will invite a group of US experts on Korea for a dinner to be hosted by South Korean Ambassador to Washington Lee Tae-Shik.

On Jan. 20, 2006, Minister Ban will attend a luncheon at the invitation of USIP (United States Institute of Peace) and deliver a speech on the subject of the US-South Korean alliance and North Korean issues. He will also have a question and answer session with experts on the Korean Peninsula.

Minister Ban also plans to meet NSC (National Security Council) advisor Steve Hadley, and US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld.

Minister Ban and his entourage return to Seoul in the afternoon of Jan. 22, 2006.
