"Democracy and the Welfare State"
Swedish Speaker Attends SNU Panel Meeting
Swedish Amb. Vargo, 6 Swedish Parliamentarians Joins
Dr. Björn von Sydow, speaker of the Swedish Parliament

Swedish Ambassador to Seoul Lars Vargo hosted a panal discussion about "Democracy and the Welfare State," joined by the visiting speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Dr. Björn von Sydow, and representatives of six Swedish political parties.

Speaker Björn von Sydow and the six members of Swedish Parliament visited Seoul.

The panel discussion was held at the Multimedia Conference Room of the Seoul National University from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. on April 12, 2006.

The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, Dr. Björn von Sydow, was visiting the Republic of Korea on April 7-12 together with a delegation consisting of six members of Parliament, five of whom are floor leaders of the political parties in the Swedish Parliament. Since the members of the delegation represented different views on important political subjects a discussion among them on various issues concerning the running of a welfare state, or the so-called Swedish Model, would be of interest for a Korean audience. Sweden and Korea are two industrialized countries facing similar political problems, and the Swedish Model is sometimes held up as an example to follow or to avoid in the Korean political debate.

In cooperation with the president of the Seoul National University a discussion was arranged between the Swedish politicians on the topic "Democracy and the Welfare State" on Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at 10:15-11:30 a.m..

The Speaker of the Swedish Parliament led the debate.

Topics that will be touched upon were:
— What are the responsibilities of the government in a welfare state?
— Are high taxes really necessary?
— What is the most important role of the government in a market economy?
— Does social responsibility deteriorate when freedom of expression increases?
— Should education and medical service be more or less free of charge?
— Is Parliament effective in scrutinizing the Government in Sweden?
— Labor market flexibility
