Time to do away with UN: paper
ST Photo Image

Abu Dhabi(WAM)—-'Shock and horror" is that the best the UN Security Council can come up with?', a major UAE daily newspaper rhetorically asked commenting on the international body's reaction to the death of four of its peacekeepers in Lebanon, "If so, then this august body that believes itself capable of ruling the world should be ashamed of itself," the Dubai-based paper opined.

"Of course, it is the very best the Council can think of without upsetting either the US Administration or, more importantly to America, falling foul of Israeli wrath, the paper remarked.

"It is abundantly clear the Israeli missiles that rained down on the clearly marked UN building in Lebanon were deliberate," the paper added.

"For despite pleas from UN staff to Israeli troops to stop, and acknowledgments it would, nearly a dozen missiles obliterated a centre for monitoring peace. That Israel claims it was not deliberate is to be expected," it remarked.

"That Israel rejected a UN offer for a joint investigation into the events is unsurprising. That Israel welcomes the UN Security Council's statement as "fair and balanced" is despicable.' "Some members of the UN Security Council, principally led by China, wanted sterner condemnation of Israel but once again the US, working in coordination with Israel, spent two days resisting the call for some form of censure against Israel." "What is it about the US-Israeli conspiracy that drives all reason away and allows the Hebrew state to be its own judge, jury and executioner?", the paper asked.

"Can it be there is no nation prepared to bring Israel to book? Is the reality such that because Israel is supported by the US then every other nation has to accept what is said and done by it?", it asked again.

"If so, then it is time to do away with the UN altogether for it has become subservient to US dictates and therefore meaningless to the world of nations", the Gulf News concluded.
