Czech Silver Medals to Be Awarded to 3 Locals
For Contribution to Czech-Korean Cultural Cooperation
Czech Ambassador to Seoul Tomas Smetanka

Opera, book translation and publishing have been selected this year as areas of cultural interaction between the Czech Republic and the Republic of Korea that deserve special appreciation. Ms. Kang Wha-Ja, president of Beseto Opera, Prof. Kim Kyung-Ock, translator of the Czech literature, and Mr. Shin Hyun-Hun, CEO of the Vertigo Publishers will receive Silver Medals of the Czech Foreign Ministry in recognition of their initiatives that substantially contributed to improving mutual knowledge of the two nations and to widening and enriching their relations.

Ms. Kang Wha-Ja initiated a fruitful cooperation between Seoul-based Beseto Opera and the State Opera of Prague that resulted, so far, in a common production of Carmen and Magic Flute with Korean and Czech soloists, staged both in Prague and Seoul in 2004-6.

Prof. Kim Kyung-Ock's Korean translation of Closely Watch Trains, a novel by prominent Czech author Bohumil Hrabal, has been recently published by Mr. Shin Hyun-Hun's publishing house. A masterpiece of modern Czech literature has thus been made accessible to Korean public.

Towards the end of every year, the Czech Ambassador presents awards to acknowledge activities that promote the Czech Republic and its culture in the Republic of Korea. Last year, actors Jeon Do-Youn, Kim Ju-Hyeok, Yoon Se-Ah and other principal makers of the popular TV drama Lovers in Prague received the medals.

An awarding ceremony and a cocktail reception in honour of the laureates will take place on 8th December at 6:00 p.m. in the Ambassador's residence. For more information please call Ms. Jung Youn-Woo, tel.725 6765, 725 6766, at the Czech Embassy.
