Algeria Inks MOU with Seoul for New City Project

Mr. Cherif Rahmani, minister of Rural and Urban Planning and Environment of Algeria arrived in Seoul on Jan. 14 (Sunday), 2007. About a dozen other officials of Algeria also came to Seoul as a delegation.

Minister Rahmani signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with President Kim Jae-Hyun of Korea Land Corporation on a development project of a new city in the North African country in the morning of Jan. 15, 2007.

During his six-day and five-night visit to Seoul Minister Rahmani is expected to meet with South Korea's leaders including President Roh Moo-Hyun, Minister Lee, Yong-Sup of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, and Minister Lee Chi-Beom of the Ministry of Environment.

Minister Rahmani and his delegation members were invited to the dinner reception to be hosted by Algerian Ambassador to Seoul Rabah Hadid at the Algerian Embassy in Seoul at 7 p.m. on Jan. 17, 2007. About 40 local businessmen mainly in construction area were also invited to the reception.

Minister Rahmani and his delegation will leave Seoul on Jan. 19 (Friday), 2007.

Minister Cherif Rahmani currently serves as president of the World Deserts Foundation. He is well-known for his dictum ""Desertification is a transnational issue and a global problem."

Mr. Rahmani started his career as government official at the Ministry of the Interior as the deputy director in 1970. He rose to the secretary general at the Ministry of the Interior in 1987.

In 1988 he was appointed as minister of youth and sports. Two years later he became minister of infrastructure. In the following years he served as minister of various government ministries.

Since 2000 he has been serving as minister of Rural and Urban Planning and Environment.

Minister Rahmani has authored or co-authored a dozen books including "Urban Growth in Algeria" and "Algiers, Capital of the 21st Century."

Minister Rahmani received a diploma from the French National School of Public Administration (ENA) and earned his doctorate in town and country planning. He was born on Jan. 16, 1945.
