Amb. Baas Grants Cross of Order of Merit to Dr. Lee
German Ambassador to Seoul Nobert Baas (left) shakes hands with Dr. Lee Chun-Shik of KIST after the German enovy presents Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Dr. Lee. at German Embassy in Seoul on Feb. 27, 2007.

On behalf of German President Horst Koehler German Ambassador to Seoul Nobert Baas presented Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Dr. Lee Chun-Shik () of KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology) for his contribution in cooperation of science and technology between Germany and South Korea. Dr. Lee serves as executive advisor of KIST Europe Research Institute.

The award ceremony was held at German Embassy in Seoul at 3 p.m. on Feb. 27, 2007. Dr. Lee went to Germany for his advanced study in the 1960s, receiving his doctorate in engineering from the Technical University of Berlin.

Since his graduation Dr. Lee worked in various industrial institutions, making a huge contribution to developing industrial technology in Germany. In 1970 Dr. Lee established an association of Korean scientists in Germany, opening a door for cooperation of science and technology between the two countries.

"Prof Dr. Lee has contributed to the Korean-German scientific-technical Cooperation in a great way during all his work life. At this his commitment was high above what is professional necessary and he still continues his work on a voluntary base," the German ambassador explained in his opening speech.

One of his main goals was the establishment of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Europe, the European center of KIST, in Saarbruecken, Germany in 1996.

Dr. Lee Chun-Shik (: fourth from right) of KIST poses with German Amb. Baas (third from right), Chairman Rim Kwan (second from right) of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, and other VIP praticipants at German Embassy in Seoul.

"It can be in general ascribed to the work of Prof. Dr. Lee, that this important bridge between Korean and European Science has its head in Saarbruecken." Mr. Baas furthermore explained.

KIST Europe aims in the creation of technical, economical and scientific cooperation between Europe and Korea. It focuses on technology transfer as well as R&D in environmental technology and mechanical engineering.

Even after he came back to Seoul Dr. Lee maintained close relations with such German institutes as Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Frauenhofer Institute.

"It was a big surprise for me, when I got the news of getting the cross. Never in my life had I dreamed of receiving such a great honor and pleasure by getting this award," Mr. Lee said in his acceptance speech.

A wide range of guests attended the reception in the German Embassy and congratulated Mr. Lee to his achievements. Among them were Chairman Rim Kwan of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, KIST President Kum Dong-Wha, KAIST President Suh Nam-Pyo, and Chairman Kang Shin-Ho of Dong-A Pharmaceutical Co,. Ltd.

Korean and German relations in Science and Technology have intensified tremendously in the last two years. Base for the cooperation of the two countries is a bilateral agreement from 1986. Furthermore there are many individual agreements between Research Institutes as well as Universities and many other relevant Institutions of both countries. Among the German Organizations represented in Korea are the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and the Frauenhofer Association.

"We Germans can learn a lot from this country, especially in means of technology," Mr. Baas said.
