Czech-Korean Science Forurm Held in Seoul
Czech Ambassador to Seoul Tomas Smetanka

High-level government officials of Korea and the Czech Republic, leading scientists and prominent business representatives got together in order to explore ways to foster cooperation, joint research and development projects, and to create innovative high-tech products and bring them to international markets. Czech-Korean Science and Technology Forum, first conference of this type between the two countries, took place on Thursday, 15th Novebmer 2007 in Seoul.

Both the Czech Republic and Korea strive to build a knowledge-based economy with a strong educational sector, wide research and development foundation, and important share of innovation. Both countries recognize the need for international cooperation and its effectiveness in order to advance their plans. Although involved extensively in R&D projects within the European Union, the Czech Republic is looking for new direct and broad cooperation channels with the Republic of Korea in science and technology.

At the one-day conference, 10 prominent representatives of Czech universities, R&D centres and government bodies introduced their institutions and outline the scope of possible interaction with Korean partners.

The list of speakers included Presidents of Czech Technical University, Industrial Property Office, and Engineering Academy. The Korean side was represented by delegates of the Korean Intellectual Property Office, Korean Institute of Industrial Technology and other major research institutes and universities. Programme of the Czech-Korean Science and Technology Forum contained altogether 20 presentations in the areas of intellectual property protection, engineering education and research cooperation, cybernetics and artificial intelligence, biology, and textile machinery.

The event was organized by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, CzechInvest, Engineering Academy of the Czech Republic, Czech Embassy and Korea Foundation for International Cooperation of Science & Technology (KICOS).

The Forum started at 8:30 a.m. on the day in Lotte Hotel Seoul, Sogong-dong, Onyx Room (2nd floor). For more information, please call 6710-7409 (KICOS) or 725-6763 (Czech Embassy).
