Canadian Embassy in Seoul to host
Conference on Global Partnership on Feb. 1
In Conjunction with Kyungnam University's IFES
Canadian Ambassador to Seoul Ted Lipman

The Canadian Embassy, in conjunction with The Institute of Far Eastern Studies (IFES) at Kyungnam University has organized a conference on "Reducing the Threat of WMD Proliferation through the Global Partnership Program," to be held on Feb. 1, 2008 at IFES.

Created in 2002, the G8 Global Partnership against Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction is a 10-year initiative designed to address one of the most serious security threats facing our world today: terrorist groups using weapons and materials of mass destruction (WMD) on innocent civilians.

"We are very happy to be partnering with one of the top Korean research institutes on this important initiative. We are also encouraged by Korea's partnership with Canada in the Global Partnership, and hope that it will continue in the coming years," said Ted Lipman, Canada's Ambassador to Korea.

The joint IFES-Canadian Embassy conference examines the roles of Canada and Korea in the Global Partnership to date, their partnership in this initiative and the potential to apply experiences from Russia to the DPRK.

Experts from government and academic organizations from Canada, Korea and the United States will be represented, with Mr. Chun Youngwoo, special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs at MOFAT, delivering the keynote address.

This one-day conference is taking place at The Institute of Far Eastern Studies in Kyungnam University.
