German Embassy in Seoul announces
US Gen. Burwell B. Bell Gets Top German Medal
"Knight Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit"
From left: Mrs. Katie Bell, Gen. Bell, German Ambassdor Norbert Baas and Mrs. Annabel von Arnim-Baas.

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany bestowed the "Knight Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit," upon Gen. Burwell B. Bell, commanding general of U.S. Forces Korea. Gen. Bell also serves as commander of U.N. command Korea and R.O.K.-U.S. Combined Forces Command.

During a ceremony on Tuesday, on Feb. 19, 2008, from 6 to 6:30 p.m., German Ambassador to Seoul Norbert Baas presented the decoration in the presence of high-ranking U.S. and R.O.K. guests at the residence in Seongbuk-dong.

Between 1969 and 2005, Gen. B.B. Bell served in Germany for 12 years in five different positions. Before he came to South Korea, he was commanding general U.S. Army Europe and NATO Allied Component Command Land from 2002 to 2005 in Heidelberg.

Germany highly appreciates Gen. B. B. Bell's outstanding commitment to the German-American friendship and his great experience in cooperation between the two allies within NATO.

It is a happy coincidence that the order of merit will be awarded to him in the Republic of Korea, which shares so many fruitful and friendly links with both Germany and the United States.
