Swedish Ambassador to Seoul Lars Vargo and his wife, Mrs. Eva Vargo, hosted a gala dinner reception at Seoul's Grand Hyatt Hotel on June 4, 2008 on the occasion of the Swedish National Day.

The reception, held under the title of "Take Note of Sweden," drew hundreds of guests. The 700-plus guests included some 90 top foreign envoys serving in Seoul, scores of top CEOs of local and foreign companies, and local media people.

Business booths were set up for such Swedish brands as Ericsson, Volvo, and Saab in the spacious Grand Ballroom of the hotel. A cappella version of legendary Swedish singing group "Abba" songs could also be heard at the reception.

The Swedish ambassador also offered scholarships to two students of HUFS (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies)' Department of Scandinavian Languages, arranged by SWEA (Swedish Women's Educational Association).

What Is Swedish National Day?

The National Day of Sweden is celebrated in Sweden on June 6 every year. The day was made into a national day by the Riksdag (Swedish parliament) in 1983, before which it was just revered as the Swedish Flag Day or Day of the Swedish Flag.

The tradition of celebrating this date began in the 1920s, in honor of the election of King Gustav Vasa in 1523, as this was considered the foundation of modern Sweden.

What Is SWEA?

SWEA, Swedish Women's Educational Association, is a global organization for Swedish and Swedish speaking women who are currently living or have lived abroad.

Joining all members via our common language, ethnicity, and culture, SWEA becomes both a meeting place and a safety net having connections around the world. This makes life easier while living abroad and also supports members when moving back to Sweden.

SWEA's Goal is to preserve the Swedish language, support and spread Swedish culture and traditions, help create personal and professional connections, as well as establish a world wide network of SWEA members.
