France Marks Birthday of "Rights Declaration"
Amb. Thiebaud Hosts Reception for Its 60th Anniversary

French Ambassador to Seoul Philippe Thiebaud hosted a reception at his residence in Hap-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul on Dec. 8, 2008 to mark the 60th anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.The dinner reception was attended by scores of high-profile guests including Vice Minister Shin Kak-Soo of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The VIP guests were invited from political, economic, cultural, and media sectors.French legislator Patrick Beaudouin was also an important participant. Currently he serves president of the France-Korean Parliamentarians' Friendship Association.Earlier French government hosted exhibitions in observance of the human rights declaration.On Oct. 9, 2008 France, as EU's presidency country, held a photo exhibition titled "A l'épreuve du Temps," meaning "Through the Test of Time" in English.On the show were works of art of such photographers as James Nathwey, Alexandra Boulat, and John Stanmeyer.The exhibition was co-hosted by Bernard Kouchner, French minister of foreign and European affairs, and Rama Yade, French minister of state for human rights.The photo exhibition will also be introduced to the French embassies in the major cities around the world including the French Embassy in Seoul.The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Dec. 10, 1948 at Palais de Chaillot, Paris.It was adopted three years after the end of the Second World War.It consists of 30 articles which have been elaborated in subsequent international treaties, regional human rights instruments, national constitutions and laws.The efforts of Rene Samuel Cassin (1887-1976), French jurist, law professor and judge, was vital for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be adopted by the UNGA.He received Nobel Peace Prize in 1968 for his work in drafting the human rights declaration.For details or inquiries please contact the French Embassy in Seoul at 02-3149 4321 or 3149 4333.
