"EUNIC Seoul" to Be Established
to Boost Cultural Cooperation between EU and Korea
Czech Ambassador to Seoul Jaroslav Olsa Jr. (left) talks with EU Ambassador Brian McDonald at a diplomatic gathering in Seoul.

During the recent Czech Republic's EU Presidency an agreement was reached on a proposal to establish a local cluster of European Union National Institutes of Culture (EUNIC – www.eunic-europe.eu) in Seoul.

The aim of EUNIC Seoul is to enhance European-Korean cultural cooperation in the Republic of Korea by coordinating and intensifying the activities of four Seoul-based cultural institutes of EU member states — French Cultural Centre, Germany's Goethe-Institut, the British Council, and the Italian Cultural Institute — with other EU member states' embassies with a commitment to cultural work in South Korea.

As culture has a fundamental impact on the visibility of Europe in the Republic of Korea, the launch of EUNIC Seoul is designed to influence the knowledge and understanding of European cultures in the Republic of Korea and of Korean culture in Europe. The creation of EUNIC Seoul is another step towards more intensive and thorough European-Korean cooperation.

An agreement to establish EUNIC Seoul will be signed by the directors of the four cultural institutes mentioned above and the ambassadors of participating member states (such as the Czech Republic, Ireland, the Netherlands) on June 9, 2009 at 11:00 at Castle Praha (Czech restaurant and brewery - www.castlepraha.co.kr) near Hongik University. The signing will be followed by a press conference and beer and food tasting hosted by the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

For details or inquiries please contact Ms. Lee Hee-Sook of the Embassy of the Czech Republic at 725 6765-6 for Extension No. 105 or leave Email at seoul@embassy.mzv.cz
