Oman Celebrates 39th National Day in Seoul

Charge d' Affaires Khalid Said Al-Zidi of Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Seoul hosted a reception on Nov. 18, 2009 on the occasion of its 39th National Day.

Held at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul the reception attracted a host of guests from all sectors of South Korea.

Scores of top foreign envoys and their spouses were also invited to the dinner reception which lasted into the evening. UAE Amb. Abdulla Mohammed Al-Maainah and Mrs. Aida Al-Maainah attended the reception as well.

Among the local guests were South Korean government officials and politicians including Rep. Song Young-Sun of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP), and The Second Vice Minister Kim Dae-Ki of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

Representing the local business circle President & CEO Woo Sang-Ryong of GS Engineering & Construction attended the diplomatic gathering.

Mr. Khalid Said Al-Zidi has been serving as charge d' affaires since the former Amb. Moosa Hamdan Al Taee left South Korea in September this year.

Newly appointed Amb. Mohamed Al-Harthy is scheduled to arrive in Seoul in the middle of December this year.

A variety of business exchanges has been on the rise between South Korea and the Sultanate of Oman since the diplomatic establishment in 1974.

It was 1976 that South Korean Embassy was set up in Oman. Oman Embassy was opened in Seoul in 1984.

Oman set up diplomatic ties with North Korea in 1992.

An aviation agreement was signed between South Korea and Oman in 1983. An agreement of cultural exchanges was inked in 1994 and the agreement was renewed in 2001.

A South Korea-Oman investment agreement was reached in 2003. Three years later an agreement on avoiding double taxation was singed.

Oman imports from South Korea automobiles and auto parts, electronic goods, construction machinery, and steel products.

South Korea's main import items from Oman are crude oil and liquefied national gas (LNG).

To South Korea Oman is the 6th major country in crude oil import and the second major country in LNG import.

Many large South Korean businesses are currently in operation in the Sultanate of Oman. They include Korea Gas Corporation, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company, and GS-Caltex Corporation.

Hundreds of South Koreans are now work and live in the land of the Sultanate of Oman.
