KAS Chairman Pöttering to Visit Seoul Oct. 13-18
EU Parliament’s Ex-President to Talk with Local Leaders
Former President of EU Parliament, Dr. Hans-Gert Pöttering, who is also chairman of the renowned Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (Foundation: KAS), will come to Seoul Oct. 13, 2010 to meet with local politicians and other leaders.Dr. Pöttering will arrive in Seoul in the late evening of the day for the five-night and six-day stay here in South Korea.During his stay Dr. Pöttering will deliver a keynote speech during "the 12th East Asia - EU Think Tank Conference" to be held at Shilla Hotel's Topaz Hall in Seoul's Jangchung-dong on Oct. 14, 2010.On the following day Dr. Pöttering will receive an honorary doctorate in political science from Korea University (KU) in Seoul on Oct. 15 (Friday) in a ceremony to be held at 4 p.m. at Global Conference Hall of KU's Centennial Memorial Samsung Hall.Dr. Pöttering will deliver a special lecture to its students under the title of "The European Union — Values, Politics, Perspectives." Dr. Pöttering will also meet with a variety of local leaders in the areas of politics and law in his efforts to boot cooperation and exchanges between Seoul and Berlin.On Oct. 14, 2010 Dr. Pöttering will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chief Joo Ho-Young of Yoido Institute, a conservative think tank of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP).The MOU will be aimed at promoting cooperation and exchanges between the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Yoido Institute, according to the foundation's Korea office.On this day Dr. Pöttering will also visit the National Assembly for talks with its leaders.On Oct. 15, 2010 Dr. Pöttering will visit the Unification Ministry for talks with its Minister Hyun In-Taek.Also Dr. Pöttering will have a meeting with President Lee Kang-Kook of the Constitutional Court of Korea.Dr. Pöttering will make a trip to the Turce Village of Panmunjoem in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) in the 38th parallel of the Korean Peninsula on Oct. 16, 2010, the final day of his stay.He will leave South Korea for Germany on Oct. 18, 2010.The German conservative politician (CDU, European People's Party), served as president of the European Parliament from January 2007 to July 2009.He was elected to his current post of chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) on Dec. 4, 2009.Dr. Pöttering was born on Sept. 15, 1945 in Bersenbrück, Lower Saxony.He studied law, politics, and history at such academic institutions as University of Bonn, University of Geneva, Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, and at Columbia University in New York.
