20th Anniversary of Russo-Korea Ties in Seoul

Russian Ambassador to Seoul Konstantin Vnukov and his spouse, Mrs. Yulia Vnukova, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the diplomatic establishment between Moscow and Seoul by inviting a host of both local and international guests to a reception at its embassy in Seoul's Jeong-dong on Sept. 30, 2010.

Held at 6:30 p.m. at the Grand Hall of the Russian Embassy in Jeong-dong, Seoul, the special reception attracted a selection of local guests from nation's political, business, and media circles as well as Russians.

Among the guests were top foreign envoys including Azerbaijan Ambassador to Seoul Rovshan Jamshidov.

From the South Korean government its Deputy Foreign Minister Chun Young-Woo was invited to the reception. He gave a congratulatory speech.

A variety of cultural events including exhibitions, literatures, and fashion shows were held both in Korea and Russia on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the bilateral relations.

In particular, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his South Korean counterpart exchanged congratulatory message on this day.

According to the Russian news agency Itar-Tass' report, The Russian leader said in his message that his forthcoming visit to Seoul in November will refresh the mutual ties and contribute to stabilization of the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.

"I would like to state with satisfaction that a substantial joint work on the development of interstate cooperation has been done for this period of time," said President Medvedev. "Our countries established close trust-based relations, which are about to reach the level of strategic partnership."

"Our recent meeting at the World Political Forum in Yaroslavl has confirmed this fully," said Medvedev. "I am confident that my forthcoming visit to South Korea and a bilateral summit will give a fresh impetus to the bilateral relations, and will contribute to stronger peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole of Northeast Asia."

The mutual ties have developed impressively since the diplomatic establishment on Sept. 30, 1990.

The bilateral trade volume has expanded some 50-fold between Seoul and Moscow.

In 2009 it reached 9,980,000,000 US dollars, whereas it was a meager 190,000,000 US dollars in 1992, according to South Korean government statistics.

South Korea exported to Russia 4,190,000,000 US dollars' worth of goods while it's import from Russia amounted to 5,790,000,000 US dollars.

Presently, Russia is the eighth largest trade partner of South Korea.

But, experts forecast that Russia will soon emerge as the fourth largest trade partner for Seoul.
