Barbara Walters: The Exit Interview
After a quarter century as co-host, Barbara Walters, the alpha female of broadcast news, is leaving "20/20," the ABC program on which she has interviewed Fidel Castro, Christopher Reeve, Hillary Rodham Clinton and — before 48.5 million viewers in 1999 — Monica Lewinsky.Nearly 75, Ms. Walters has made it clear that she's not leaving television news, the form that she, as America's first female anchor, helped define. She will continue to produce a half-dozen interview specials a year for ABC, including her signature Oscar-night specials, and she'll also appear twice weekly on "The View," the daytime talk show she created. The right story, Ms. Walters has hinted, might even bring her back for a guest appearance on "20/20." As the network struggles to reinvent the show without her, she sat down with Virginia Heffernan to talk about making celebrities cry, landing big interviews and pronouncing L's and R's. Here are excerpts.HEFFERNAN: You've been at "20/20" for 25 years. Why are you leaving now?WALTERS: I wanted to leave at the top — after the interviews I had last year, including the second interview with Martha Stewart. Newsmagazines in general are somewhat in jeopardy, I think. I didn't want anyone to say, she was forced out, she had to leave.Q: But you're wearing a ring that says "I did that already." Have you gotten tired of television news?

A: It's changing. And I'll tell you the way it's going to be: we're going to hear that a woman had a love affair with a frog. The producers are going to come to me and say: "Barbara, this woman had a love affair with a frog. Diane Sawyer already has the woman lined up. Do you want to do the frog?" And I will say, "O.K., but only if I can get the frog and his mother." And they'll say: "But the frog wants an hour. And before you do the frog, the frog is going to do `Oprah.' O.K.?"But I don't like to talk about it as if these are the bad days and those were the good days. I hate that kind of, "Ah, it was wonderful ..."Q: Let's talk about the old days anyway. How did you get started in television?A: At a certain point I had to work. I had to support my whole family. My father was, I guess, what we would call an impresario. He produced great, glorious shows, kind of like Las Vegas shows, in at the time the most famous nightclub in America, called the Latin Quarter. Many comedians still know me as Lou A's daughter. But like many great impresarios, my father died broke, and I supported the family from the time I was about 22 or 23. I had to work. And I had a sister who was older than I, who was borderline retarded.Q: Were you close to her?A: The most dominant person in my life was Jackie. I was embarrassed by her, and at the same time I loved her very much. I always knew I had to take care of Jackie — financially support her, but more than that. The sadness of her life gave me an understanding, and a compassion, and a pain in my heart. If you want to make me cry, talk to me about my sister.Q: That's how you found your way to television?

A: I was the assistant to the director of publicity for the local NBC station, WNBC-TV. Then I went to work in public relations, where my boss was Bill Safire. Then I got a job on "The Today Show" as a writer. And then I did "Today Reports." I did — I don't know what — "a day in the life of a nun." I was a Playboy bunny for four days. So I was known to the audience because I had traveled and done these stories — and, by the way, did my own makeup and hair.Maureen O'Sullivan was hired because the mistake was made that we still make today, which is that if someone's very good being interviewed that they can automatically do good interviews. She was very unhappy on the show. And when we went into the convention that nominated Lyndon Johnson, she couldn't cope with it. They took her off, and hired me for 13 weeks, and I stayed on for 13 years.Q: How did you get your first big interviews on "Today"?A: Frank McGee [the show's host] had made it part of his — it was his decision that if there was a hard news interview I could only come in after he'd asked three questions. Only if I did it outside of the studio, then I could do the whole interview. So that's when I think I had a reputation as being very pushy because I tried very hard to do interviews outside of the studio. I did Henry Kissinger.
And I knew many of the ambassadors in Washington. At one point the Egyptian ambassador introduced me to the foreign minister, and I said that I would like to interview Anwar Sadat. So the foreign minister arranged it and I flew to Cairo. Over the years I did more interviews with Sadat, I think, than any other journalist, certainly any other television journalist.Q: Did the network recognize your contribution?A: It was only the last two years that I was made co-host. What happened was that Frank McGee died [in 1974]. And then NBC put out a release saying we're looking for another host. And I said, "Co-host," in a little quiet voice. And they said: "Co-host? A woman co-host?" So ever since then, the women have been co-host.Q: Why did you leave when you'd been made co-host?A: I left NBC after 13 years on "The Today Show," in which I had been very happy. But ABC asked me to be the first woman co-anchor of the evening news. And I thought, I'll take a chance. How bad can it be? It was awful. I was promised all kinds of things that never came to pass.Harry Reasoner didn't want a partner and he didn't want a woman. He did not talk to me off the air. And I thought it would be news and interviews. Today it's not considered anything if the anchors do an interview. Then it was shocking. My first day that I was on the air I did an interview with Sadat and the second day with Golda Meir. I can't tell you how I was criticized for doing it.

The papers were hideous. I was criticized for this salary of, quote, "a million dollars a year." That wasn't for news! It was $500,000 for doing the news and $500,000 for four one-hour prime-time specials. I was drowning without a life preserver. I thought that my career was over.Q: How did you handle it?A: I didn't go into therapy because I knew what the problem was. I was working with a man whom they had not talked to to find out how deeply he resented it. I was a younger generation so I hadn't grown up working for the Associated Press or the United Press. My education had been in television.I think about it to this day, that feeling of walking into that studio where no one talked to me. The only one I had was my makeup person. I would cry and she'd say, "Stop crying, you're smearing the makeup."It was so obvious on the air that I began to get the sympathy vote. People thought: "Why are they doing this to her? She's working so hard." One day I got a telegram from a man I did not know. It said, "Don't let the bastards get you down." And it was signed John Wayne.Then Roone Arledge decided to let Harry go back to "60 Minutes" and keep me.Q: But he didn't keep you on the evening news that long. Did you have any reservations about accepting the job on "20/20"?A: The first show, which I had nothing to do with, was a disaster. After about a year or two, Roone said, "I want to give Hugh Downs a partner." That was 25 years ago.Q: Do you remember the first time someone cried in an interview with you?A: No. And I try today not to make people cry. When you do celebrity interviews — at least when I do — I very often start by talking about childhood, because what happened in your childhood, obviously — and I'm not Sigmund Freud — is what made you the way you are today. "What effect did that divorce have on you? You were very close to your mother, what about your father?" When you start to talk to people not about "tell me about your career" but "tell me what effect did that have on you today," they will very often get very teary. Now today I say, "Don't you dare cry." I don't want to hurt people now.Q: Is the competition for big interviews as tense as we always hear it is?A: For many years we didn't have bookers so you would do it yourself. You call the lawyers and you write letters and you follow it up, and sometimes it can take months and years. And sometimes it happens very quickly because the person will say, "You are the one I want to do it with." But usually it takes perseverance. There are people who send flowers and gifts and so forth. I don't.But, Virginia, this has been going on for seven hours. Come on, you're not going to do this much. Can I edit it?Q: What? Are you a control freak?A: No, but I am very hands on. I will do a rough edit. Or I can do what I do with the producers: you do your rough edit and I'll do mine; and then we can compare——Q: You've got to be kidding.A: and then we can compare on the sections that we really feel are important, where we agree. I'm very happy to do it.Q: No, thank you."The View" still seems like it was a big departure for you. But it was your idea. How did you think of it?

A: One day the network came and said: "Do you have any ideas for a daytime television show?" I said I had this idea for a show: different women, different generations. I said it should kind of be a cross between a show that used to be on years ago done by a woman named Virginia Graham which was just girl talk — it was unscripted — and the round table of "This Week With David Brinkley." It's not such a great idea. What's so original about different women of different generations? It's the chemistry. We're going into our eighth year. No one is more surprised than I am.Q: One last question. You have been teased for the way you speak. Do you have a speech impediment?A: I don't. I think there are other people who don't pronounce their L's too well. I think I could pronounce my R's stronger. I also have a left-over Boston accent — I say cah, I don't say car. See, I think that my mother should not have named me Bar-bar-a Wal-ters. She should have named me Diane Sawyer.
