Michael Radford Signs for "Castro's Daughter
Oscar Nominee to Direct Award-driven, Historical Drama
Alina Fernandez (born March 19, 1956) is the daughter of Fidel Castro and an outspoken critic of the Cuban Communist regime. She lived under her father’s rule from when he took power in 1959 until she fled the country in 1993 with her daughter because of dissenting political views.

Hollywood, CA — British filmmaker, Michael Radford has attached himself to direct Mankind Entertainment’s upcoming, true-life historical drama, ‘Castro’s Daughter.’

Radford will bring his masterful vision to the film, which follows the amazing, true life story of Alina Fernandez — the exiled daughter of Cuba’s former communist leader, Fidel Castro.

After years of disagreements with Castro, Fernandez courageously escaped her homeland of Cuba disguised as a Spanish tourist; she later wrote her international bestselling memoir, ‘Castro’s Daughter: An Exile’s Memoir of Cuba.’ Fernandez, now a global icon, holds lectures at colleges in the U.S, and worldwide; and commentates for cable news shows, Fox and CNN routinely.

The screenplay was written by Bobby Moresco, who won an Oscar and BAFTA for co-writing Crash in 2005; and Cuban playwright: Nilo Cruz (‘Anna in the Tropics’), who won the Pulitzer Prize and Steinberg awards in 2003. ‘Daughter’ is being produced by Mankind’s John Torres Martinez, and Joe Lamy; who are also producing Lee Daniels’s (‘Precious’) development project, ‘Anna in the Tropics.’

Radford, a classical favorite, reached acclaim with his film adaptation of George Orwell’s novel, ‘1984.’ He later went on to direct his most famous work, ‘Il Postino;’ a world renowned, Italian-set love story which garnered him two Oscar nominations for Best Directing and Best Screenplay, two BAFTA wins for Directing and Best Film (non English), and a David di Donatello nomination for Best European Film. His film took an Oscar for Best Music, two BAFTA’s for Best Film (non-English) and Best Music.

In addition to it’s critical acclaim, the film went on to become a massive financial success, breaking worldwide box office records at the time of its release—and held as the highest grossing international film for several years after. The film grossed over 25 times its budget at the box office, went on to become a classic, and is currently being distributed through Miramax as a collector’s edition.

With the recent success of content-driven films, such as last year’s historical drama, Tom Hooper’s ‘The Kings Speech,’ ‘Daughter;’ is already gaining global attention from specialty film financiers, production companies and studios alike—with various companies circling the material.

Radford’s attachment was put together by Mankind and Sue Rodgers at Independent Talent, in London. Filming is expected to take place in Puerto Rico; where the project will take advantage of a hefty tax credit of 40%—and their recently announced additional 20% for non-residents. Casting will begin in the coming months.
