1st Korea-Italy Symposium on Genetic, Nongenetic Determinants of Successful Aging
Italian Embassy, Gachon Univ. to Cohost Workshop
Italian Embassy in Seoul will host the "1st Korea-Italy Symposium on Genetic and Nongenetic Determinants of Successful Aging" at Lee Gil Ya Cancer and Diabetes Institute (LCDI) of Gachon University in Incheon between 2 and 6 p.m. on Oct. 4, 2011, the embassy announced on Sept. 27, 2011.The symposium, to be co-hosted by LCDI, will be aimed to scientifically addressing the issue of new population aging and longevity with a particular focus on the status and future developments of aging science in Italy and South Korea. The timing of this workshop could not be more appropriate since the global population aging is nowadays among the most important issues with which we urgently have to deal at present time and we shall have to deal in the coming years. The dramatic consequences of population aging are worldwide recognized as not only the scientific but also the social issue of the present century and a threat of deep changes of human life. The solution for these issues expected to be enrouted to the wisdom of healthy and productive aging people, represented by the centenarians. Sardinia of Italy is the world most representative area for male longevity, where the gender difference in longevity is uniquely negligible. And traditionally, the Sardinian people have valuated the longevity as the principal human happiness, called “Akentannos”. In contrast, the Korean longevity is rapidly increasing recently but with female dominancy. This contrasting gender difference in longevity between these two countries, which shall be analyzed in broad spectrum of scientific terms, including genetics, life styles, family systems and eco-cultural characteristics, would illustrate many interesting and distinguishable features of human longevity and might facilitate the discovery of the solutions for the coming aging world. The Symposium, foreseeing distinguished lecturers from Italy and Korea, would represent a contribution to the new growing “aging science” having the largest relevance in the scientific research and in the technological development of most advanced Countries in the World.
