Lyon Mayor Gérard Collomb to Visit Seoul
40 Lyon Delegates to Seek Cooperation with Seoul
Mr. Gérard Collomb, senator-mayor of Lyon and president of Greater Lyon in France

Mr. Gérard Collomb, senator-mayor of Lyon and president of Greater Lyon in France, will visit South Korea on July 18-19, 2013 to boost economic and cultural cooperation with the Metropolitan Seoul City, announced the French Embassy in Seoul on July 15, 2013.

The embassy said that the French senator-mayor would lead some 40-member business delegation to South Korea.

The French business delegation comprises local Lyon city councilors, representatives of economic, cultural, and academic organizations in Lyon, and businesspeople.

Among the delegates are Mr. Jean-Michel Aulas, the owner and president of Lyon's top-flight soccer club “Olympique Lyonnais,” President Bruno Bonnell of “Syrobo,” the French trade association for robotics, and President Philippe Grillot of the Chamber of Commerce Industry of Lyon.

While in South Korea he is expected to meet with numerous local leaders including Seoul Mayor Park Won-Soon.

Senator-Mayor Collomb will meet with local Korean journalists in a press conference to be held at KT’s Total Operation Center (TOC) building in Yeomri-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul at 4:30 p.m. on July 19 (Friday), 2013.

Earlier on the day the senator-mayor will be invited to the luncheon gathering to be hosted by French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Korea (FCCIK) gathering. He will speak about foreign investment policies of Lyon in front of the FCCIK members.

Last year the official business delegation from Lyon visited South Korea. It was headed by Mrs. Karine Dognin-Sauze, vice president of innovation and new technologies for Grand Lyon (Greater Lyon).

They had various meeting with their local strategic partners in many areas including robotics, smart grid, video game, energy, and even tourism.

This time, the senator-mayor will explore ways of expanding business ties particularly with the local Seoul Metropolitan Government.

In particular, both Lyon and Seoul are expected to promote cooperation and exchanges in area of robotics and other areas as well.

Lyon, the second largest city in France, is known to have invested heavily on robotics in recent years, seeking cooperation with South Korea in the area.

The cooperation areas between Lyon and Seoul include the areas of artificial intelligence and green growth.

The French delegation is expected to focus on the four areas in seeking cooperation from South Korea – technological innovation and intelligent city, culture, economic cooperation, and higher learning and research.

Who Is Gérard Collomb?

Mr. Gérard Collomb has been the mayor of Lyon and the president of Greater (or Grand) Lyon since 2001 and the senator of Rhône since 1999.

He was born on 20 June 1947 in Chalon-sur-Saône, Saône-et-Loire. The French politician is an active member of the French Socialist Party.

He was elected as a Socialist municipal councillor for the 9th arrondissements in the French municipal elections, 1977.

At the age of 34 he he was elected to the French National Assembly in 1981.

From 1989 on, he led by the municipal opposition to Michel Noir in the Lyon municipal council. From 1992 to 1999 he also served as regional councillor for the Rhône-Alpes region.

Defeated in the 1995 local elections in Lyon, he ran as leader of the Plural Left list in the 2001 local elections. He was elected mayor on March 25 and also elected as president of the Urban Community of Lyon. Among his realizations is the Vélo'v.

In 2004, he was re-elected senator for the Rhône. He was overwhelmingly re-elected mayor of Lyon in March 2008, defeating Dominique Perben of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) by the first round in a landslide.

Ahead of the Reims Congress, he is the leader of the Hope on the left, proud to be Socialist (L'espoir à gauche, fier(e)s d'être socialistes) motion of behalf of Ségolène Royal. He was a finalist for the 2010 World Mayor prize.

His vision combines a strong ambition of economic development and a real attention brought to quality of life and living environment.
