Oct. 5, 2013, Seoul — The first edition of Romanian Language Speech Competition, co-organized by the Embassy of Romania in Seoul , Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and the Romanian Korean Intercultural Association (RKIA), was held in Seoul. It is for the first time that Korean natives who can speak Romanian take part in a competition to test their Romanian language skills.

The general theme of the contest was Travelling in Romania. The participants could introduce the audience to a destination in Romania that they have already visited or could talk about a touristic attraction that they wish to explore in the future. Following the outstanding presentations, the jury awarded two first place winners, all prizes being offered Romanian traditional gifts as prizes, but also Romanian classical literature books printed by the Romanian Cultural Insititute, offered by Embassy of Romania to the Republic of Korea, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania.

This event is part of a series of activities supported by the Romanian Embassy in Seoul, among which the Romanian Cultural Evening, initiated in order to promote the tourism, traditions and culture of Romania to the local and central authorities in the Republic of Korea, as well as the Korean public. The sustained activity in promoting Romania among the local public includes participation by the Embassy in cultural events organized throughout the territory of the Republic of Korea, including the International Week of the Francophonie and Seoul Friendship Fair, to name but a few.

Furthermore, the Romanian speech contest was followed by an annual event organized by the Romanian language department from the Hankuk University for Foreign Studies, the Golden Bell.

Through this competition, the students’ knowledge about the history and culture of Romania was tested and the winners were awarded scholarships for summer school in Romania. H.E. Dr. Călin Fabian, Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Korea, as part of the jury in this competition, also participated in the awarding of prizes at the conclusion of the Golden Bell and, at the same time addressed a speech of congratulations and support to all students present.
