Co-Hosted by Canadian Embassy in Seoul & KOPRI
Canadian Ambassador to Seoul
David Chatterson

Embassy of Canada in Seoul and the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) will co-host the Canada-Korea Arctic Policy Symposium on November 12, 2013, the embassy announced recently through a news release.

The symposium will be held at the Embassy of Canada in Seoul in celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Korea, and will provide an opportunity to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen bilateral cooperation between Canada and Korea on Arctic issues.

The symposium will bring prominent speakers from Canada and Korea to a targeted audience from the public and private sectors for an in-depth discussion on Arctic Council priorities and initiatives, the Arctic policies and R&D capabilities of Canada and Korea, and northern economic development opportunities.

The symposium will also provide a venue for informal discussion between Canadian speakers and Korean Arctic experts, as well as a valuable networking opportunity.

The symposium is composed of three secessions: Arctic Policy Session, Arctic Research & Development, and Northern Economic Development.

Both Korean and Canadian experts will speak about:

“Canadian Arctic Foreign Policy & Arctic Council Priorities and Initiatives”

“Korean Arctic Policy Directions, Interests and Initiatives”

“Canadian Arctic R&D”

“Korean Arctic R&D)”

“Building a Strong North: Resources Development Opportunities in Canada's Northern Territories”

“Resources Development Projects in Canada's North”

“Challenges for Shipping and Offshore Engineering in the Arctic”

“Research and Development of Arctic Resources : Korean Perspective”

Korea gained permanent observer status on Arctic Council in May, 2013 and Canada's term as chair of the Arctic Council started in May, 2013 and runs through 2015.
