Highest-paid Athlete Floyd Mayweather Seeks 47th Straight Victory This Weekend
By Prof. Andrew Dunne
The world's highest-paid athlete and arguably best boxer of all time, Floyd Mayweather, looks to extend his unbeaten record to 47-0 this weekend. On Saturday, September 13th, he fights Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas for the second time in less than five months. This weekend's bout is being billed as Mayhem, meaning a scene or situation that involves a lot of violence. If the rematch resembles their first encounter, the billing is appropriate. Last May, Maidana showed less respect than Mayweather's previous 45 opponents, elbowing, kneeing, and even head butting the five-division world champion. Ultimately, though, Mayweather's superior fitness and ability to make adjustments during rounds were too much for the gritty Argentine. This Saturday, Maidana has vowed to be even more tenacious. He has also had a longer training camp this time around, so improved endurance is anticipated. However, I can't help but think of the popular expression: past behavior is often the best predictor of future behavior. With a winning streak that spans almost two decades, Mayweather is hard to side against.Even investor-extraordinaire Warren Buffet seems to think so. He recently stopped by Mayweather's gym to watch the champ in his 'office'. What do you think - will Mayweather tally another win to his unblemished record or will Maidana topple the champ? Tune-in to find out. Factoring in time difference, the fight will take place around 1 or 2 p.m. on Sunday in Korea. If you're lucky, you might be able to catch the fight at a local establishment. Or, simply watch the fight online.
