Taekwondo Reform Process Making Strides
Reform Committee to Make Recommendations in Feb.
SEOUL, Dec. 13, 2004 — The Reform Committee of the World Taekwondo Federation wrapped up its first meeting here Saturday.The five-day meeting, which kicked off Tuesday, marked the initial stage of a process to review and offer recommendations for the reform of The World Taekwondo Federation. Its aim is to make Taekwondo more appealing and action-packed, and transform the WTF into a more global and professional organization. Following its successful gathering, the 11-member Reform Committee, headed by Dr. Nat Indrapana, a Vice President of the WTF and member of the International Olympic Committee from Thailand, is scheduled to draw up a set of recommendations for submission in February to the WTF leadership."Taekwondo is Korea's gift to the world, and our goal is to make this gift ever more valuable to the global community," said Dr. Chungwon Choue, President of the WTF.About 30 experts and officials from Korea and abroad delivered presentations to the Reform Committee on the wide range of technical and administrative fields of Taekwondo, and subsequently engaged in detailed policy discussions. The committee is delighted with the level of cooperation and openness to change from all participants. Participants voiced their conviction that Taekwondo will move forward to a higher standing on the world stage.The Reform Committee also reviewed the results of surveys sent to the WTF's 177 member associations around the world and Executive Council members. Founded in 1973, the WTF has a worldwide membership of 177 countries. Taekwondo debuted as an Olympic sport at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and found a prominent place at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
