S. Korean Political Parties Woo UN Sec. Gen. Ban Ki-Moon As Their Presidential Candidate
Attacks on Mr. Ban Increases as His Popularity Soars
South Korea's politicians and political parties are desperately trying to welcome Mr. Ban to their camps when Mr. Ban's popularity as the next presidential candidate soars again. In particular, a new conservative camp, recently split from the ruling Saenuri Party over the presidential corruption case called "Choi Soon-Sil Gate, is most eager to have Mr. Ban join their party tentatively named "New Reform Conservative Party."Attacks on Mr. Ban have been increased particularly from Mr. Moon Jae-In of the main opposition Democratic Party, exposing suspicions and rumors about the UN chief.A couple of days ago a local magazine Shisa Journal reported that Mr. Ban received a cash envelope of 230,000 US dollars while he was serving as foreign minister of South Korea. Mr. Ban denied the allegation as a nonsense.UN Sec. Gen. Ban Ki-Moon expected to come to South Korea sometime in the middle of January of 2017 as his tenure as UN chief ends at the end of this year. All the political parties, the ruling and opposition parties alike, are busy getting ready for the coming presidential election as the Constitutional Court shows a sign of making the impeachment process of crest-fallen Park a speedier one over the mounting pressure of millions of candle light protesters over her misuse of her presidential power.Currently, Ban enjoys the highest popularity among a group of presidential hopefuls. The recent polls, released by Real Meter on Dec. 22, 2016, found Mr. Ban at 23.1 percent. Mr. Moon Jae-In of The Democratic Party was at 22.2 percent.Mr. Moon is the one who enjoyed the highest rates until Mr. Ban expressed his intention to run for the next presidential election a week or so ago.Mr. Ban Ki-Moon is the 8th secretary general of the United Nations. Mr. Ban became UN secretary general on Jan. 1, 2007. Mr. Ban was reelected unanimously as the UN chief by the General Assembly. His tenure as "world's president" terminates on Dec. 31, 2016.
