Jin Roy Ryu (׳), Chairman & CEO of Poongsan Group, Joins CSIS Board of Trustees.


WASHINGTON DC, Dec. 1, 2020 — The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is pleased to announce that Jin Roy Ryu (׳), chairman and CEO of Poongsan Group, has joined the CSIS Board of Trustees.

I am delighted to welcome Roy to our Board of Trustees, said CSIS president and CEO John J. Hamre. CSIS will benefit tremendously from his global vision and innovative spirit.

Since 1999, Ryu has served as chairman and CEO of Poongsan Group, which his late father Chan-u Ryu founded in 1968. Today it is one of the largest manufacturers of copper products and munitions in the world.

Ryu is actively involved in the leadership of numerous business organizations, including as vice chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries and the Korea International Trade Association.

He also supports a number of philanthropic and educational organizations. He is board chairman of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation in South Korea, vice chairman of the Korea Mecenat Association, trustee of the George & Barbara Bush Foundation, and a member of the Board of Visitors at the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership at the City College of New York and the Board of Governors of the PGA Tour's First Tee program.

In 2015, Ryu played an instrumental role in bringing the Presidents Cup golf tournament to South Korea for the first time and chaired the tournaments organizing committee.

For his distinguished service and steadfast efforts to enhance South Korea's standing within the global community, the South Korean government awarded Ryu the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit in 2005 and the Order of Civil Merit, Moran (Peony) Medal, in 2012.

Jin Roy Ryu (׳) has been a successful industrialist, social leader, and a philanthropist based in Seoul, Korea.

Chairman and CEO of Poongsan Group, one of the largest manufacturers of metal products and munitions in the world. Under the business group he heads 12 different companies. He holds the position of chairman & co-CEO at POONGSAN HOLDINGS Corp., president of Poongsan Industrial Corp. and director at Hwadong Co. Ltd. (both are subsidiaries of POONGSAN HOLDINGS Corp.), chairman at Poongsan Special Metal Corp., chairman & Co-CEO at Poongsan Corp., chairman & CEO at PMX Industries, Inc. (a subsidiary of Poongsan Corp.) and chairman & CEO at Poongsan Group.

Socially, he is actively involved in a number of business organizations. He serves as vice chairman of the Korea-U.S. Economic Council, vice chairman of the Korea Defense Industry Association, and vice chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries for a few examples.

As a well-known philanthropist, Ryu supports a myriads of charity organizations worldwide. He is also chairman of Pyongsan Scholarship Foundation.

He serves as board chairman of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation Korea, a vice chairman of Korea Mecenat Association.

His activities reaches out to sports filed as well. He was instrumental in bringing the Presidents Cup golf tournament to South Korea. He also served as chairman of the Presidents Cup 2015 Tournament Organization Committee.

In the past Ryu was the chairman of PSMC Co., Ltd., chairman for Business & Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD, chairman at Korea Nonferrous Metal Association, chairman for International Wrought Copper Council, chairman of Pearl S. Buck Foundation. He was also a trustee at The First Tee, Member of The Trilateral Commission and Trustee at George Bush Presidential Library Foundation.

Mr. Ryu received an undergraduate degree in English Language & Literature from the prestigious Seoul National University and an MBA from Dartmouth College in the US.
