Latvian Films Shown in South Korea
First Latvian Film Festival Held in Busan, Daegu
The first Latvian Film Festival was held in South Korea's Busan, port city, and in Daegu, another major city on May 15-16, 2021 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic establishment between Latvia and South Korea, the Latvian Embassy in Seoul has recently announced. In its news release the embassy said that a total of eight Latvian films were shown to the local South Koreans in the two large cities in Gyeongsang Provinces during the two-day event.Among the films three were full-length films and the other five were animation films. They were shown to the people free if charge. The feature films were "Blizzard of Souls," "Dream Team 1935," and a documentary film "Liberation Day.""Blizzard of Souls" deals with the life of a Latvian man who entered the tragic World War I at an early age and his emotional struggle from the war."Dream Team 1935" depicts a real life story of the Latvian basketball team which became a European champion for the first time in the history of Latvia. The documentary film "Liberation Day" is the story of a Slovenian rock band and its performance in Pyeongyang, capital of North Korea."My Favorite War," one of the five animation films presented, was the story of a young Latvian girl who were educated in Latvia when it was under the Soviet Union's Communist rule. This work combines distinctive cut-out animation with family photos and archival footage to forge a look at an authoritarian society through young girl's eyes. The animation “Rocks in my pockets” is a film based on true events involving five women of director Signe Baumane’s family and their battle with depression. A uniquely drawn story that raises questions of how much family genetics determine who we are and where we are going.Latvian film industry has been developing steadily since Nov. 18, 1918 the day Latvian Republic was established, the release said.Contact:
