Amb. Castrence says
S. Korea is No. 1 to the Philippines

Philippine Ambassador to Seoul Susan O. Castrence

According to Philippine Ambassador to Seoul, Susan O. Castrence South Korea is the No. 1 country among the four major countries most important to the Philippines.

In a recent interview with a local daily she said South Korea outnumbers any other country in terms of the number of tourists visiting the island nation. Korean students wishing to practice English, newly married couples on honeymoon trips, and senior Koreans retired from jobs are the major reasons why Koreans are pouring into the Philippines.

Along with New Zealand Ambassador to Seoul , Jane Coombs, Castrence is one of the two female ambassadors serving in Seoul.

She described Korean people as being too emotional referring to the fracas at the National Assembly, and the militant students clashing with police on the street.

The top Philippine envoy also reminded Koreans that the Philippines sent 7,000 troops to aid South Korea in the Korean War (1950-53). She said 116 of its soldiers died during the course of the war.

The veteran diplomat with 40 years of foreign service speaks French and German as well as English. She served in Washington DC, and Tokyo. She came to Seoul on Feb. 3, 2006.
