Only A Progressive Statesman Can Make the World Future Bright
By Tanveer Jafri
Contributing Writer
Prof. Mohammad Yunus

The noble award winner and well known economist of the world Prof. Mohammad Yunus has made up his mind to play an active roll in the politics. He has set up a new political party named Nagrik Shakti (Citizens Power) that would context all three hundred constituencies in the next parliamentary Election. Yunus felt that he himself and the village banks run by him are totally associated with the social work so he can not keep himself away from Politics. Prof. Yunus hold the present political system responsible for the present condition of the poor and there not being self dependent. Therefore it was hopped that the poor and the progressive people having positive thoughts will welcome his entrance into politics but the politicians were expected to criticise this step. The same happened. The former Prime minister Sheikh Haseena, the President of the main political party, Awami League of Bangladesh condemned him saying that the people who charge 4% interest from the poor are the exploiter of the poor and not prophet.

This will not be the last comment by sheikh Haseena on this step of joining politics by Yunus. Yunus will have to tolerate such obstacles at every step to put of the traditional politicians. These politicians who have made the political setup stagnant and cripple. Not only in Bangladesh, but the conditions are more or less equally bad in almost all the countries of South Asia also. It will not be a mistake to say that not only the South Asia but the whole world has become a prey of wrong political system and selfish political thoughts. At such a time, entrance of a great economist Prof. Yunus into politics seems a danger for the leaders who consider politics as their ancestral property.

Undoubtedly, Prof Yunus is originally a native of Bangladesh who was born with the simple personality in a Muslim family but by giving economic help to the poor and by his thoughts of making them self dependent have made him an angle for all the poor of the world and to the people who are involved in the causes of upliftment of the poor people of Bangladesh are fortunate because they have a personality such as Professor Yunus. But Pro. Yunus's desire to join politics has given a good omen not only for the people of Bangla Desh but for the people of the world also.

There is nothing hidden about the present politics and the world level politics for the people who are active in politics. Some countries are being ruled over by oil mafia and government of some countries are in the trap of drug mafia. At some places religious leaders rule is all in all in politics and at some places dawns and convicts are everything. Where there, convicts, mafia dawns and religious leaders are finding themselves unable, there they are trying to over power the power in their own way. The consequences are before us. War, destruction, devastation, crime, starvation, poverty illiteracy etc all are the results of this foul politics. There is disorder, disharmony and anarchy every where. Most of the people in the world can hardly make both ends meet. To think of development is a for away matter for them. The circumstances have changed to the extent that 40% people of the world are owner of 94% income of the world. The remaining 60% are compelled to survive on the remaining income of 6%. Should these statistics not be seen as the cause of global anarchy? What else should be the example of treading the human rights? This improper economic policy is the main cause of world disorder. Besides this, the present faulty social & political set up, the deficiency of real democracy in democratic countries & its misuse are also the main causes of anarchy in the world.

Misfortunately, the most of the leadership of the world don't seem to be prepared to fight against the above world economic evils. Some of them may be feeling themselves helpless in the present atmosphere of polarisation. The United Nations Organisation had set up a target to eradicate half of the poverty of the world by 2015. For it, the time limit was fixed at 2015. In 2000, in the history of United Nations Organisation, it was the first & historical meeting of the world leaders to eradicate poverty. But a misfortunate happening happened for the poor of the world because America became a target of terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. The vow to fight poverty of the world leaders, themselves found caught in the war against terrorism. The alleviation of the poor began instead of mitigating poverty. This is still going on & the poor are finding themselves in difficulty to survive on this mother earth.

But now this process needs to be stopped. A great need is being felt in politics for the people who are clean in politics & are active in progressive thoughts. Prof. Mohammad Yunus is neither desirous of spreading Islam in the world nor ambitious of spreading boundaries of Bangladesh. He is not struggling for these narrow aims. The rules prepared for his Grameen Bank are not in accordance with Quraan or Islami religious doctrines. Yunus wants that the poverty should become a thing to be placed in a museum to be seen by the coming generations. Today, the world politics is eagerly waiting for the politicians who have this thinking.

After the declaration of war against terrorism America has spent so huge amount of money for its need against it and is spending, that is sufficient to remove a good part of the poverty from the world. But the war will not be able to remove it. This will increase the poor and the poverty. There is one and only one way to eradicate poverty from the world and that is the implementation of a good economic policies. This will raise the life standard of the poor and it will lessen the disorder and anarchy. But the arrogant and egotistic politician thinks it necessary to spend money on the manufacturing of weapons that are only for the destruction of the poor and not of the poverty.

If the world is to be freed from the shackles of these explosive circumstances, then not only Prof. Yunus but all the persons who have progressive thinking and have clean impressions in the world should take immediate decision to be active in the politics. A former election commissioner of India and Magassasse Award winner Mr. J. M. Lingdoh was asked a question before his superannuation by a correspondent, if he would be active in politics after superannuation? He replied that he would rather die than to enter politics. He also stated that he did not like the company of the politicians. I had badly criticised the thoughts of Mr. Lingdoh in one of my editorial articles at that time. In my views the statements given by Mr. Lingdoh who is a respectable, efficient and capable person and who has clean impressions as when states such opinions about politics then inefficient, corrupt and criminals get a chance to be active in the politics. Slowly such type of people get a strong hold on politics and after some times these undesirable persons who have entered politics prove fatal for the world and the humanity.

Undoubtedly, the muscle power is above the others in world politics. But this situation will not last long. The world is in the hold of persons who have polluted thoughts but at the same time there is no dearth of people who have good and positive thinking in the world, people who have thoughts like Yunus feel encouraged the there is a news of his taking active part in politics. It is not so that people who get Noble Awards or international or any other respectable awards are not doing the work of social upliftment. Their great works for the society make them great and enable them to get these high awards and as a result of it they achieve the glorious status in the society. But today the people of the world feel it that the good persons who are associated with the welfare of the society, want to serve the humanity, want to establish peace in the world and are in favour of the ancient Indian thoughts –' The world is my family'(Wasudhaiva Kutumbkam) should be active in the politics.

Pollution in politics is not a new thing. The great American leader and Former President Abraham Lincoln remained annoyed with the thoughts of the politicians. He used to say if politicians stop the process of indulging in their foul play to get power in politics, he will have no work to do. But in spite of this all, he remained active in politics throughout his life. In fact all the problems are raised by the politicians. Their existence is only because of these problems. They think that if there are no problems, no body will come to them. So these politicians firstly raise the problems and then for their solution involve the people in their positive and sometimes in their negative ideas.

The need of the hour is that the work like politics that is associated with the clean, reputable and cent percent social welfare works should be given a direction that should be according to the desires of the common man. Today the agility of such politicians is strongly needed who feel that ignoring the human rights is the main reason of the poverty and this is the mother of terrorism and anarchy. To enable the poor people to get their rights it is necessary for the persons like Yunus to make to enter in the active politics.
