Terrorism vs. Communal Harmony in India
By Tanveer Jafri
Contributing Writer
A bombing incident in Mumbai, India

Terrorism has become worldwide problem. The 9/11 incident in America, a terrorist attack on World Trade Centre in New York proved that the terrorists can go to any unimaginable extent & cause even the heavy horrible incidents. They never care for, even the heavy loss of life & property while indulging in their activities.

They don't think of the reaction that may result from their terrorist activities. For example, the terrorist attack on World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001 resulted in more than 5000 innocent deaths. Since then in reaction to this happening, it is said that more than 2 million of innocent people have been killed, on that excuse or the other. But the terrorists never bother about the fact that the reason of this reaction by America is the activities of the terrorists & so terrorists are responsible for it.

Similarly, these terrorist have done the acts of terrorism in India & many a time, tried to spoil the communal harmony. Again & again, the minorities have to face their cruelties in Kashmir. Consequently, more than 1 million of Kashmir minorities are forced to lead a life as refugees in the different cities of India. The common culture of Kashmir is also losing its charm because of their nefarious activities. Obviously when the terrorist hurt the minorities in Kashmir, the communal harmony in India is also hurt.

The terrorists attacked many religious places in India such as Raghunath Temple in Jammu, Akshardham Temple in Ahmedabad, Sankat Mochan Temple in Varanasi & even a graveyard in Malegaon.

They killed many innocent people who were shopping in the busy & crowded markets on the eve of famous Indian festivals Eid & Diwali. Undoubtedly the terrorist selected the time & place very cautiously, with the objective of making terrorist attacks so that maximum loss of life & property may be caused & communal harmony in India is disturbed.

They want communal riots in this country of common culture. They want to create hatred & enmity between the different religions. But they always fail in their wicked objectives.

The roots of communal harmony are so deep in India & the people as well as the government face the incidents so wisely & with strength that the reaction is not according to the desires of the terrorists.

But once, India was shocked, when these terrorists made an attack on the Indian Parliament, an apex centre of Indian Democracy. At that time, undoubtedly every Indian was shocked & ego of every Indian was hurt. Only due to the intervention of America, a military action could be avoided that may have resulted something serious. After this incident, the governments of India & Pakistan reached a conclusion that the peace process between these two countries equipped with atomic powers must go on.

The train Samjhauta Express, that was cancelled, was restarted. A bus service between Lahore & New Delhi was started. Many other rail & bus routes were opened between these two countries. The people of both the countries began to feel that the relations between these two countries have started to improve. But the separatists could not bear this. They don't want that the tension of last five decades between these two countries should finish. They enjoy the pleasures & luxuries only on the basis of this hatred. They challenge the communal harmony, again & again for their wicked aims & even challenge the Indian government & Indian Armies.

On the last February 18, these terrorist caused a very ugly incident when they set on fire the train, Samjhauta Express. There were 757 passengers in this train travelling from New Delhi to Lahore. This train is considered a safe train for the passengers travelling between the two countries. This incident happened only 90 km away from the capital of India & 70 passengers in two of its compartments lost their lives. Most of them were Pakistani citizens.

The terrorists had planned to set on fire the complete train but the train was stopped before the fire could spread to other compartments. Otherwise all the passengers would have met the undesirable fate.

The terrorists wanted to spread communal hatred by making any extreme organisation of India responsible for it. But they couldn't succeed. After the incident, Indian society showed a good example of communal harmony. Obviously when Pakistani citizens fell prey to the terrorist incident in India, they had no kith & kin present here.

The Hindus of the village Diwana near Panipat in Haryana did their best to help the victims & even pulled out the Muslim dead out of the burnt compartments. They helped the wounded & showed generosity & sympathy. The remaining passengers were also treated very well. Not only this, the women of that village mourned the dead Muslims. This incident shows that the terrorists may cause many such incidents but they will not be able to spoil the communal harmony in India & their villainous efforts will no succeed.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasoori had to come to New Delhi to take part in a high level meeting to discuss the peace process going on between India & Pakistan. It was scheduled for the following day of this happening i.e. Feb. 19. The terrorists wanted to discourage this peace process but they failed in their objectives. This meeting between the Foreign Ministers of India & Pakistan, to carry on the peace process was held as scheduled & more steps were taken to establish peace. Here too, the terrorists failed badly because they could neither spoil the communal harmony in India nor could discourage the peace talks.

Now the terrorism that got nourished out of the boundaries of India has crossed the limits & has started harming its nourishers. So it has become the responsibility of the world to face this terrorism & uproot it. Undoubtedly, it has also become the responsibility of India & its neighbours who are affected by it & those where the terrorists run their training camps. The people & the countries that help the activities of the terrorists secretly or openly, should feel its horrible consequences.
