Luciano Pavarotti's Memorial Concert in Seoul
It Starts at HanJeon Art Center at 8 p.m. Oct. 10, 2007
On the 6th of September 2007, Luciano Pavarotti passed away. The whole world had been listening to the news for days, following the story of his illness with the same affection and empathy they have been showing for the great Italian artist along his career. For more than three decades Pavarotti had been considered as the top voice in the Opera world. Many great singers worked in the same years but, as it happened with Maria Callas, his talent obscured all his rivals. Gifted with a natural talent in the most popular of male voice registers, tenor, Pavarotti was so generous in his artistic career as well as in his private life. We still remember some mass crowded concerts in Central Park or in London were he sang for free, for all those who loved him and Opera itself. Less known, but maybe more important, were his charitable activities all over the world. Born in Modena on October 12, 1935, the son of a baker and amateur singer, Pavarotti wanted to be a soccer star, but found himself enjoying his father's recordings, featuring the popular tenors of the day. Pavarotti abandoned a career in school-teaching to dedicate his life to singing. He won the international competition at the Teatro Reggio Emilia in 1961, making his operatic debut there as Rodolfo in La Bohème. Pavarotti made his international debut in 1963 at the Royal Opera House in London. Since then he ruled in the most prestigious theaters: La Scala and the New York Metropolitan Opera were his favorites.
|Late Luciano Pavarotti |
His voice and performance were very much in the powerful style of the traditional Italian tenor. He became internationally known as a concert performer, and achieved a large popular following through his recordings and television appearances. He also appeared in the film Yes, Giorgio in 1982, and published a volume of autobiography the same year. Pavarotti invented the "Three Tenors" concert (with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras), a format that was hugely successful and credited with bringing classical music to the masses at a level never seen before. Pavarotti also shared the stage with rock stars including U2's lead singer Bono and Eric Clapton, and even pop stars like Celine Dion and the Spice Girls. He and Bono collected humanitarian aid during the Bosnia war. And Pavarotti worked with the late Diana, Princess of Wales, to raise money to ban land mines worldwide. In 2005 he received a Red Cross Award for Services to Humanity. When the final moment was approaching Luciano told the people around him: "remember me just as an Opera singer" This is why on the 10th of October in Seoul, one month after his death, the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute, together with the National Opera of Korea, decided to commemorate the great tenor joining millions of other people on the globe. The venue is the KEPCO Art Center in Kang Nam, at 8:00 pm. Together with a concert performing three great Korean tenors, Park Hyun Jae, Ha Seok Be, Han Yoon-Suk, an original video about the Maestro's life and career will be projected. Attendance will be free, as Luciano would have wanted.Contact:ITALIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE
