On June 13, 2008 the Prestigious Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany was bestowed on a local university president in honor of his contributions to the bilateral relations between South Korean and Germany.

During a solemn ceremony held at the German Ambassador's Residence in Sungbukdong, Seoul on June 13, 2008, the President of the Hanyang University Kim Chong-Yang was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

"Federal President Horst Koehler decided to bestow the high decoration upon Prof. Kim in acknowledgement of his manifold contributions to enhance Korean-German relations notably in the field of science and research," said Amb. Norbert Baas.

During his tenure, Kim co-initiated the German-Korean Education Research Industry Cluster Ansan (ERICA) which cooperates closely with German science institutions such as the Max-Planck-Institut and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
