The Tamil and Sinhalese Conflict
By Tahir Khan
Bombay Correspondent
A Tamil family in the slum bare which are flooded. Tamil people (also called Tamils) are an ethnic group native to Tamil Nadu, a state in India, and the north-eastern region of Sri Lanka. They speak Tamil with a recorded history going back two millennia.

This conflict originate from the tendency of nationalism. Tamils of the Shri Lanka are fighting from long time for separate Tamil state called "Tamil Elam."

There is the statement need attention which given by Thanthai Chelva who is the first person gave the idea of Tamil Elam.

"Eelam nation should exercise the sovereignty already vested in the Tamil people and become free."

This struggle among two separate community Sinhalese and Tamils. There are many juncture which ignite the struggle, including language, violence and standardization of education. The struggle begun with words and now ended up in suicide attacks killing each other and both sides suffered lot approximately 70000 people lost their including President of Shri Lanka and even Prime minster of India also.

In this struggle LTTE play prominent role and engaged arm struggle against Shri Lankan army and moreover they known as pioneer in suicide attacks and now is the sole sponsor of the Tamil struggle and at time present lead by Prabhakarn.

Intervention of country like Norway and UK who try to occupy the another strategic location, their funding and logistical support to LTTE make situation more degraded rather than solved.

Both of authority counter claim and blaming each other and have their own justifications of war against each other. If we go through the chronology is much easier to understand the conflict in greater dimension.

Tamil claim they are the real and most primitive inhabitant of Shri Lanka and they fought many battles against occupier of the Shri Lanka and thus this is the legitimate right for them to claim their own separate state from Shri Lanka. However, the real battles start in 1948 after formation of Shri Lanka when central of power comes in the hands of Sinhalese and this dominance of Sinhalese was not accepted by the Tamils, from that point Tamil claims Sinhalese ignore them and try to destroy their identity and not gave them full rights including the ruling.

Conflict increases day by day and both community attacked each other and violence irrupt many time and intervention of military make situation worse. This thing which slowly give the flames the Tamil struggle and rise of LTTE.

There are certain things which has been mentioned by the LTTE for legitimise of their struggle against Shri Lanka but issue is Shri Lankan government also has legitimate explanation of LTTE blames.

Language: Tamils claims that from 1957 onwards Sinhalese language was forcefully imposed upon them as a official language without their will. But Shri Lankan authority claims before 1957 Tamil was official language of Tamil areas.

Violence: Tamil claims communal violence irrupts and many Tamilians were killed. But the Shri Lankan authority says both community suffered by the violence and moreover in Tamil dominant area like Jaffna Sinhalese and Muslims suffered lot.

Standerdisation: Tamil claim government not allow Tamilians to educate through standerdisation program but the Shri Lankan claim this standardization is regional not a communal.

At last the Root cause of this conflict is originate from the rotten western idea of nationalism and this nationalistic tendency has been clearly visible in the statement of LTTE leader Prabhakaran.

"This is our land, the land in which we were born, grew and live, the land which bears the foot prints of our forefathers, the land in which our culture and history are rooted."

The issue is if both community are serious for solution they can solve easily by talk without any intervention of other nation. Military action and suicide attacks make situation worse rather solution, killing each other not a solution.

The Shri Lankan army engaged in last phase of fighting with LTTE rebel right now and they nearly controlled whole territory which has been occupied by the LTTE. But the question is this conflict is end up here ?.
