"Days of Bok" or "Dog Days"
During the hot and sweltering summer days of boknal, or the Western version of "Dog Days" Korean people normally go out for samgyetang (»ï°èÅÁ), a special dish of the whole spring chicken boiled in a hot pot and stuffed with rice, ginseng, and other herbs. Other Koreans still keep up with their tradition of eating boshintang or dog soup and meat.Days of Bok (ÜÑ) or Boknals are the hottest days of summer, which range from mid-July to mid-August in South Korea. the first "Dog Day" or the First Bokanl(ôøÜÑ) was July 19, 2010. And Middle Boknal (ñéÜÑ) falls on July 29, and Last Boknal (ØÇÜÑ) will be on August 8, this year. The three particular days are called Sambok (ß²ÜÑ) or three days of bok.The days of bok or boknals are observed on the basis of Lunar Calender. It is quite interesting that the half part (̳) of the Chinese letter "Bok (ÜÑ)" means dog. Europeans also call this hottest period of summer "Dog Days."Many Asian countries have a long history of eating dog meat. Both Chinese and Korean history books show that dog meat was popular in the old days.Archeological evidences reveal that ancient Europeans ate dog meat as well.
