![]() Turkmenistan Ambassador to South Korea Myrat Mammetalyyev and his wife Tazegul Mammetalyyeva hosted a dinner reception at Namsan Room of Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel in South Korea on Oct. 11 (Thursday), 2018 on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of its Independence Day. A host of high-profile both local Korean and foreign guests were invited to the dinner reception held at 6:30 p.m. on the day. They included scores of top foreign envoys and their spouses. The career diplomatic Ambassador Mammetalyyev has been serving as the ambassador of Turkmenistan to Seoul since April 28, 2014. The currently South Korean ambassador to Turkmenistan is Mr. Chin Ki-Hoon.
Turkmenistan and South Korea opened the official diplomatic ties in February in 1992. The bilateral relations and mutual cooperation between Turkmenistan and South Korea has been on the steady rise since 1992, the year two nations established diplomatic ties in February. Particularly, since South Korean opened its embassy in Ashgabat, capital of Turkmenistan and its largest city, the bilateral ties has been closely developed in politics, economy, and culture. In November of 2008 Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov arrived in Seoul on his state visit to South Korea, meeting with then President Park Geun-Hye. In return, President Park visited Turkmenistan on June 20-21, 2014. She became the first South Korean head of state to visit the Central Asian nation. Since the exchange of the presidential visits to each other¡¯s nation the overall bilateral relations has further developed and cooperation further expanded. South Korea depends on partnership with Turkmenistan in the field of oil and gas. The development of gas fields, the creation of petrochemical and gas infrastructures, and the overall modernization of industry is on top agenda for South Korea and its businesses. Such South Korean companies as LG and Hyundai are involved in constructing complex for a polyethylene and polypropylene production in the village of Kiyanly, near the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea. The whole project is valued at over 3.4 billion US dollars for the total cost. The complex is scheduled to completed later 2018. South Korean Ambassador to Turkmenistan Chin Ki-Hoon said that Turkmenistan has rich natural resources, holding world's fourth biggest natural gas. He went on to say that Turkmenistan has been boasting of an average of 6 percent economic growth rate in recent years on the strength of oil and gas exports. Recent statistics show that the total bilateral trade volume between Turkmenistan and South Korea has expanded from 200 million to close to 2 billion US dollars in past several years. Currently, both Turkmenistan and South Korea has mutual concerns, paying keen attention to the transport sector in the Central Asia nation. They are working on development of transit and logistics infrastructure along the East-West and North-South routes, which will provide access to European and Middle Eastern markets.
